Bombs Over Tulsa

It was a fine weekend. Saturday evening was spent at Ville's, where we drank some Bass Ale, ate way too much junk food, made up a record number of jokes and plays on words, and played with their Wii. It was just what I needed. Today was a lazy day with much napping in front of the telly.
  • Did you hear the one about the F-16 that dropped a 22-pound dummy bomb on a Tulsa apartment complex on Friday night? No? Read all about it at the Tulsa World. They say the FBI and their various counterparts are investigating, but I'll bet dollars to donuts that we'll never hear another thing about it.
  • How about that commercial for the Mirena IUD? It states that women who qualify for it are, among other things, "...in a stable relationship". What the heck does that mean? Why does it matter, who's going to decide this, and by whose criteria?
  • That damned 16-day pledge drive on OETA is finally over. I know they need to do these things, but 16 days? And it took up three full weekends. Still, they aired some really great programs and they did keep the Britcoms on schedule. As a matter of fact, all we missed was Masterpiece Theater, which was in the midst of The Complete Jane Austin when the pledge drive began.
I guess that's it for tonight.

  1. Those weekend warriors. At least it was a 22 lb practice bomb and not a 500lb Mk82 Snake Eye.
And no,we won't hear about it again.

  2. I think "in a stable relationship" is either something we say in a politically correct environment or a bow to the moral peevishness of the Religious Right. The country's going to hell in a handbasket. Ever since bicycle helmets!

  3. According to a .pdf brochure on the website, "stable relationship" means that both partners are monogamous. My guess is that the device has the potential of breaking the tissue lining the uterus, which could cause bleeding. Active uterine bleeding would increase the likelihood of contracting HIV if the woman has sex with a man who has it. I could be wrong, but I doubt that any woman would be prevented from receiving the device if she wanted it, no matter what her relationship status is. Having the disclaimer on the ads and literature might prevent them from being sued if someone who has the device contracts HIV.

  4. HorusJ: What I don't understand is why they'd be dropping practice bombs. One article said that the bomb fell at about 600mph. That could have been fatal.

    RW: I heartily concur!

Deni: I thought it was probably a legal issue, too.

  5. Bombs over Tulsa? This stuff is getting too scary! Like the nuclear warheads they were joy-riding around with, unawares. I think the military is getting way out of control.

  6. Either the ground crews didn't attach the bomb correctly to the plane or the pilot released it,and if I'm correct that requires a couple of steps, not just pushing a button but also a safety switch like on a gun...but in a 40 million dollar jet.

A little "oops" history:true,a B-52 dropped a nuclear bomb off the coast of Spain in the 1960s.The bomb wasn't armed obviously(or Spain wouldn't be there today).
