Armchair Circumnavigator: The World

The World is a man-made archipelago of 300 islands in the shape of a world map. The World is one of several artificial island developments in Dubai. Like the other artificial island projects such as the Palm Islands, The World was built primarily using sand dredged from the sea. Development was by Nakheel Properties and originally conceived by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai.

Each island ranges from 250,000 to 900,000 square feet (5.7–21 acres) in size. The only means of transport between the islands is by boat and helicopter.

Prices for the islands range from $15-45 million. According to the National Geographic Channel (The Best of Megastructures) the overall price for the World is $14 billion.

Plans are in the offing to build The Universe archipelago. It will form a cluster of islands in the shape of the solar system. The Universe will have about 7,500 acres of land and will take 15 to 20 years to build.

  1. I am injoying the beauty of only a thought to live on one of those islands,on one hand the whole idea is great,to spend your money building like that but on the other hand,I am not quite sure do I like the idea of taking from the ocean to make profit of it,on such a scale!Dilema?
Anyhow, glad that you are feeling better, greatings to you and your loveones.

  2. Hey! Where's Victoria? It separated from New South Wales in 1850.

  3. Strikes me this 'world' is one of the most crass things ever invented. All that money would surely have been better spent getting the real world into a healthier state?

  4. did you see that 'Atlantis' has been found in Google Earth.

  5. I wonder if the worldwide economic crunch has slowed the production of such wasteful albeit beautiful things?

  6. Something about this doesn't feel right to me. A lot of the "projects" from Dubai feel the same way.

But if could buy one of those islands it would be Madagascar. Just for kicks.

  10. I don't approve or disapprove of how the man spent his money, I just found it while flying around in Google Earth.

But while we're on the subject...
Some people build real estate in the form of high-rises in oved-crowded cities. Some build it in the form of tracts that encroach on prairies, forests, and deserts. This guy built his on man-made islands. I don't see a problem with him using ocean space instead of land -- there's a lot more ocean on this planet than there is land. Maybe his idea is a good one. What does his development take away from the environment that our housing developments don't?

But yeah, Lee. Why did he leave out New South Wales?

GeoJoe: That's interesting. The grid, by scale, is huge, so I doubt they're roads. But what IS it? I have a bunch of "anomalies" that I'm posting in my next Circumnavigator entry. I'd like to include this one.

  11. Earl: Judging by the placement of Madagascar, it would make a great place for you to open a beach bar!

  12. www.mongabay.com has some excellent articles about the environmental impact of this thing. The destruction of the marine environment is already extensive; when they start pouring raw sewage, the runoff from keeping grass growing and green, not to mention the fact that they want to sink some ships to create an artificial "sunken wreck" diver's paradise and the concomitant pollution caused by that, it all adds up to a ghastly display of humankind's arrogance. I agree with Jinksey: it's crass. Nothing but a playground for the ultra-wealthy. I don't see beauty in such artificial creations, myself. Not to mention the stupidity of this endeavor - with ocean levels rising due to global warming, this will be yet another fool's dream. Sorry to rant, but I'm so tired of rich people's attitudes that they are so special and should somehow be separate from us "commoners". In the end,the final end, what good will their money really do them? It will not buy them immortality. They will die just as any poor person dies.

  13. Thanks for clarifying, Kathy. I should have known that you'd be up on the environmental impact of this thing. Thanks again!

  14. I'm not against creating things, honestly. It's just that these things always seem to be done without considering the full ramifications of the project - the focus is always and only on the money that could be made. But some things make just too big an impact to be considered right. I hate sounding like a Luddite here, but I think of Jeff Goldblum's line in "Jurassic Park": "You were so taken with the idea that you could, that you never stop to think if you should". That pretty much says it for me.

  15. That was one of my favorite lines from Jurassic Park, and it really does speak well to persons who become so blinded by their own power and ability that they fail to see the impact that it has on society and/or the planet as a whole. It's the old "Tower of Babel" story revisited.

  17. Are they really building this thing? I've been reading lately that Dubai is having serious economic trouble, since the vast wealth there is drawn from the financial industry, which is the industry that's tanking worldwide. Entire construction jobs in Dubai are being halted with the shovels still in the ground.

  18. The World has already been built, but it's my understanding that The Universe is still pending.

    That sounds strange.
