Poem Wanted

As I lay trying to fall asleep last night, I began imagining one of the student recitals that we will be hosting for Nettl's voice studio in Vienna. I saw and heard it quite clearly, the entrance of arriving guests, the buzz of conversation with frequent outbreaks of laughter, the clinking of glasses... It was very clear.

Later, I imagined accompanying Nettl on one of my compositions and suddenly a new melody sprung to my mind. As usual, it began as a simple tune, but as I lay working with it in my mind, it soon developed harmony and structure. Well, there was no going to sleep with all that going on in my head, so I got up and crept downstairs to the piano, where I wrote out the best of what I'd created. Just the simply melody of the final twelve measures.

I intend to work on it over the weekend, but I need to find a text.
  • Key: G-major
  • Time Signature: Common time (4/4)
  • Tempo: Adagio
  • Text: I'd like to find a poem that contains a sense of wistful longing.
Any ideas? Do you have a poem you would like set to music and sung by one of the most beautiful Lyric Mezzo voices out there?

  1. have the two of you thought about marrying in Canada prior to your trip. Though Austria is not one of the countries that recognize marriage, from what I understand, it is easier in the EU when you're already married. I know that K and I are talking about this strategy to prepare for the possibility of forced emmigration.

  2. I cannot tell you how excited I am to see all of the creativity flowing from you. Of course, you have the finest of muses. The thought of her smooth, milky white flesh still makes me swoon and her laugh sends me into apoplexisms of joy, but it is her voice that does away with my body and escorts me to heaven.

Yes, I'm overly sentimental. Chaulk it up to steroids.

  3. Actually, we're looking into establishing residency in Massachusetts and getting married there before we leave for Austria. And although Austria doesn't perform gay marriages, they do recognize gay marriages from countries and/or states that DO perform them.

    Okay, I'm definitely blushing now.

  4. Austria does indeed recognize same-sex marriages, although it does not create them.

We have considered getting married in MA first, but what a load of crap that is!

Who cares? Do heterosexuals worry about this shit? No. And neither will I. All I want is to pay the rent. I will leave the politics to the younger folks. We can always incorporate, which is what we plan to do. Medical insurance? I will get it.

I'm going to Vienna to retire and then, die. Whatever people make of that is their problem, not mine.

  5. Margaret Atwood comes to mind, my favorite poem of hers is Text to be displayed In the secular night you wander around
alone in your house. It's two-thirty.
    Everyone has deserted you,
or this is your story ...

I also like The Moment (The moment when, after many years
of hard work and a long voyage
you stand in the centre of your room,
house, half-acre, square mile, island, country,
knowing at last how you got there)

and Morning in the Burned House In the burned house I am eating breakfast.
You understand: there is no house, there is no breakfast,
    yet here I am.

I understand too little of music and composing (nothing really), these are poems that come to mind, useful or not.

    Good luck! :-)

  7. The marriage bit just makes it easier for two people to stay in most countries even if only one has a visa and things like that, plus there are all of the other bits that we all know go along with it. I couldn't remember if Austria recognized them, which is great. I know a lot of EU countries do. MA would be difficult, but Cananada is a three day trip. We may do that, in the near future, just in case. Anyway, I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time.
