The Hunt for the Perfect Manuscript

When Lynette and I were in Vienna last I said that I had to go to Musikhaus Doblinger in the Dorotheergasse. I'd discovered during my first stay in the city that only they carry the perfect manuscript. I've always been very particular where music paper is concerned. I prefer off-white 100g paper that has a smooth surface so that pencil or pen glide along it like skating on ice. I also prefer 12-staves printed front and back and I like it to be about 11.5 by 8 inches. Landscape only, please. And the lines must not be more than 1/16th of an inch apart. As usual, click the images to enbiggify.

I came home with only two booklets and now that I'm back to composing I need more. I used to buy my manuscript exclusively from Judy Green Music in Hollywood when I lived in California, but I find that it's just too heavy, too yellow, too big, and too expensive. A slightly comparable booklet from her would cost me nearly $20, where what I really want from Doblinger is only about 4 euro.

I went to the Doblinger website thinking that I could order two more booklets, only to find that they don't have any for sale online. Maybe they no longer have that booklet in stock, I don't know.

Can you believe that we live in a city with a university that boasts a better-than-average music department, yet there are no music stores here? Well, there's one, Daddy-O's, but it caters to the Rock crowd. There's no place to even buy sheet music here! Unbelievable.

So, I'm hoping I can find something online, but it's really impossible for me because manuscript is something that I must feel and weigh in my hands before I can commit to buying it.

That's it, really. Just thought I'd share.

  1. Do you have a printer? You might have better luck just finding blank paper that is exactly what you want and then printing the staves like you want. Your ideal size is a little off of the regular size -- you want 8 x 11.5 and it's normally 8.5 x 11 -- but you might be able to get what you want. The European A4 size is closer to your size -- 8.3 x 11.7.

    It's a thought, anyway.

  2. Steph,
I can go and buy the paper at Doblinger for you! I may even find someone to take it to the USA, but mailing would be no problem either. How many booklets would you like me to get for you?

  3. JP Deni: We have a printer, but no software!

Merisi: I can open an account at Doblinger. Would you mind just finding out if they still have that product? If they do, then I could order it online. Wow! How nice!

The info on the cover is:
    Neuner-Notenheft
12 systeme, Querformat, 40-setig, Papier 100g, holzfrei; weiß.

The price tag on the back reads:
    Notenheft A4 - Querformat 12 linig
    1015a
    UA
    82348
    Eur: 3,70

I'm sure it's gone up in price by now.

This is awesome of you, Merisi!

  4. You should not settle for any less than "perfect." I understand the others wanting to be helpful, but using less that "perfect" would be like painting with a kitten's tail.

BTW: did you read K8's Vivaldi post? http://cackaloo.com - it's wonderful.

Word Verifier: Teduym; what you say when you are doing mischief "Teduym, teduym, teduym..." (Say it like Klem Kadiddlehopper)

  5. You might check into the paper at the art store behind Cowboy Book. While they may not have the booklet you are looking for they may have a local or semi-local place to get one, or you might be able to find the paper you want and make your own, scanning an existing page or making your own is not that difficult and you can use freeware software!

  7. Steph,
    I called Doblinger:
The Neuner Notenhefte are not produced anymore! Doblinger only has a few copies of the vertical format left in stock, in the quality you like.
They offer as a substitute, in the format you like, apparently in the same paper quality (the gentleman I talked to could not find any more precise info on the package), a note pad, with 100 pages, printed on both sides, where the pages can be torn off, made by a company named STAR. The cost is Euro 6.90 each.

A friend of hours will stay with us over the weekend, leaving for Washington DC on Monday morning. I could get the note pads either this afternoon, or Saturday morning. Please let me know how many pads you'd like to buy.

I enquired about the shipping costs:
    Basic fee is 12 Euros,
added are 3 Euros for each Kilo (about 2.2 lbs).

Should come cheaper to send it via US mail, as printed matter, from DC. You don't need to open an account at D., one day you'll come to Vienna and you'll have to take me out for a coffee and chat! :-)

My mail address can be found on my blog. Have a wonderful day!
