You have elected to spend one year in a remote place of your choosing. The only condition is that you will be alone. The only time you'll have contact with someone will be when supplies are delivered once a month. You can have a computer, but there is no internet connection. There is no TV. If you choose the last remote location (see below), you will have all the human contact you want, but only with the people in your "neighborhood". Here are your options. Which one do you choose, and why?
Satellite in orbit
Third world shanty--I'm too social. I need human contact on a daily basis or I shrivel. Plus I love learning about new cultures, new languages, new traditions, and new religions. I'm not a hermit--I'm a people person deluxe!
ReplyDeleteI'm with Nettl. I would absolutely choose the shanty. I would much rather have human contact than anything else.
ReplyDeleteI'd take the fire outlook in the mountains.
ReplyDeleteI'd take the beach hut on the volcanic island, while I like cold Antartica is deathly cold, space station way too remote, plus after a year there rehabilitation would be massive. Fire Outlook would be nice but would have to watch for fires, hehe.. Tent in death valley, no real bed... Third world shanty, scares me just because I know the type of crime that is present in most of them. Ugh So it was a process of elimination, plus maybe there would be a chocolate farm on the island. I could grow other plants too..
ReplyDeleteI think you've been fed a line of crap concerning crime rates in "third world" or developing nations. Crime rates in third world countries are extremely low in the most poor areas. Where the crime rates soar are in the cities, where drugs and sex trafficing are the biggest crimes.
ReplyDeleteYou're not going to see high crime rates in shanty villiages because the people are too poor. They can't buy or sell drugs because they don't have the money to do so, and they're not going to get into sex trafficing because the opportunity doesn't present itself in those areas.
If the volcano is dormant I'll take the volcanic island.Because my like for the ocean and climate.
ReplyDeleteThat surprises me! I thought you'd opt for going into space.
ReplyDeleteI am fascinated with Antarctica so I would probably choose that. I get to bring a year's supply of whiskey, right?
ReplyDeleteBut that beach hut on the volcanic island is tempting.
Fire lookout in the mountains - definitely! My other choice would be the research station in Antarctica.
ReplyDeleteThat tent in the picture of the tent in Death Valley is a Zeus Classic by Eureka! I almost bought that as my backpacking tent but found an REI one I liked better. Sorry - backpackers tend to notice gear! haha
I think the social contact in the shanty town would be great but I think there would be too many people. Therefore, give me the beach hut. Runs along the beach and lots of interesting smells. I love the beach.
ReplyDeleteShanty town for me too - at least I might be useful to other people in some way. Solitude can be quite selfish.
ReplyDeleteI'm just selfish enough to require a flush toilet as a minimum requirement wherever I am, so that leaves out the shanty town, the beach hut and the tent in Death Valley. The fire outlook may or may not have a toilet, but if it does, of the three remaining, that would be the one I'd choose. If I didn't have anybody to talk to, I'd at least like to be able to go for a walk.
ReplyDeleteSpace? Urgh! Trapped in a tin can in the vastness of space and too much could go wrong like loss of oxygen.
ReplyDeleteI'd go for the beach. White sand and blue water sooth my soul.
ReplyDeleteLeave it to Joel to be logical. Sheesh....details
ReplyDelete:-)
I love this question! I would choose space but insist they have a gravity room where i can train. Its an orbiting satellite so i can see the whole world from a very unique position. The ethereal view would inspire me to finish my book. I do lean towards solitude and i like writing at night, imagine writing in space! I would require a room with a massive glass window so i can just look out and think.
ReplyDeleteP.S
Just hope theres no space junk floating past my big glass window, i would be so annoyed if a plastic starbucks cup floated by...
