Don't Ask

This morning our 15 year-old daughter walked into your bedroom and asked,

“What does Fleischhosen mean in English?”

"It's German for Meat Pants," I replied.

She shrugged. "That makes sense."

After she left, Nettl and I looked at each other and started laughing.

I have no idea...

Can you describe what Americans suggest “Fleischhosen” to be meant? I am German and I can tell you that there is no word like this that means anything to Germans. Meat pants ist the word-by-word translation but what does it mean to you?

From what our daughter told me, it’s the last name of a cartoon character here in the States.

In a baser sense, "meat" often refers to the, erm, penis. Pants, of course, are, well, Hosen. The meaning would be something like, pants that are well-packed, if you know what I mean.

It is not the name of a cartoon character. I think your daughter lied because she felt uncomfortable explaining the racy situation in which the word came up when she was watching "American Dad!" and the character Klaus says something about his fleischhosen.

Well, I doubt she lied. She's not like that. She was only asking because she heard it on TV.
